They do say all good things must come to an end, and now we must say farewell to the DTS Autumn Seminars of 2011. This years seminars have been one of our most successful yet and everyone at DTS would like to say a special Thank You to all those who attended.

As we come to the end of the summer months and winter looms closer, this year has seen some dramatic changes in our industry which are just the start of the shift to digital dentistry. Hopefully many of you have already attended, or will soon attend, one of our DTS Autumn Seminars, where we are showcasing all the innovations and techniques and support DTS can offer. These changes are being driven by the need to be more cost-effective in our current economic climate. At DTS we have supported our customers through this year with no increase in prices when the VAT was changed in January and when gold prices hit an all time high we introduced Opalite Crowns - the lowest priced Full-Zirconia Crown & Bridge solution in the UK, giving you an alternative to PFM and gold shell cases. New products, like Opalite, will only be the first of many new cost-effective materials that will hit our industry in 2012 and DTS, as usual, will be at the forefront.

DTS one of the leading digital dental laboratories in the UK was proud to be a part of such a rrewarding, interesting and educational event. The Dentistry Show 2011 had a fantastic 84% attendance rate this year which meant around 2,400 dentist, nurses practice managers and many more packed themselves in to the bustling two-day event.

2011 has certainly had a sombre start to the year. With winter weather preventing patients from making it to practices last month and all the gloomy predictions from the government for the economy and even with mentions of another recession in the UK it doesn’t look like there is much to get excited about. But don’t worry, it’s not all doom and gloom.

Gold has played a part in Dental restorations for thousands of years. The earliest recorded records are of gold being used in Phoenician Dentistry and are in Italian Museums dating back to 2000-2500 BC.
Event Review: 2010 FGPD Study Day

On 3rd December 2010 DTS attended the FGDP(UK) Study Day in Glasgow and, despite the awful weather, it was nice to see a nearly full venue. Around 260 out of 300 delegates were able to make their way to the event - even with the artic conditions! And a few VDP's whose event in Edinburgh had been cancelled also were able to attend making it a full and interesting day.

This year DTS was pleased to see the EAO's Annual Conference being held in our home town, Glasgow. The event invited a speaker faculty from over forty highly respected scientists and clinicians from around the world. They explored the most important issues facing the industry today.
DTS Golf Days Review

This year at DTS we decided to do things a little differently. Though we have hosted golf days before this was the first time we had given our golf day winners the chance to not only play for the title of ‘champion’ but also to play on the most exclusive course in Scotland. To make it fair we held two golf days at two fabulous Golf Courses – Rosemount and Dundonald. We invited all of our customers to play and the lucky few who were able to book their place were in with a chance to win that incredible prize.

As anyone who has watched TV in the last ten years will know makeover programmes have taken over. We had Trinny and Susana who dressed the Nation, entertaining us with their witty banter and practical advice while there were other programmes that went beyond the wardrobe. Then the 10 Years Younger makeover show came along and looked at so much more than your dress sense. Smoothing out wrinkles with botox and battling bingo wings with surgery this programme focused on making contestants look, well, ten years younger! And it was only a matter of time before this concept of individual transformation was taken from telly and brought to life within communities.
Aesthetic vs. Function

In the era of aesthetic dentistry today there are a plethora of materials allowing practitioners to provide outstanding results. With materials such as lithium disilcate and layered Zirconia, clinicians can achieve exceptional outcomes when sufficient clearance for such materials is provided. Unfortunately general dentistry provides added challenges like bruxing, worn, limited or broken down tooth structure, over closure, sensitivity, limited coronal height and, for younger patients, larger pulp. Providing such patients with tooth-like restorations without compromising the vitality of the natural tooth structure or the usual masticulatory maxillary mandibular relationship can prove challenging.

Over the last 12 months we have seen an unprecedented rise in the price of gold due to gold being seen as the only safe place for your money in this challenging climate. DTS has always been keen to maintain the ‘all inclusive’ price of crown and bridge so that you are fully aware of the charges on each case. However, at the end of last year, due to the rise in gold prices, we made an exception for all gold shell crowns to come with a standard price plus the gold per gram. Today gold has continued to rise to over $1200 per ounce, so again we have no option but to act.

It’s not only pulling in influential speakers from some of the UK’s highest regarded cosmetic surgeons it’s also at the heart of the real issues facing today’s industry. And the education doesn’t stop at break time.

We are pleased to be exhibiting at the BACD Annual Conference 2009 – The Future Dentistry. The exhibition is taking place at the EICC in Edinburgh. We will be there on the 19th and 20th November at stand 15. We will be demonstrating the new 3Shape Dental Face Scanning system that allows both dentist or lab to visualize and interactively update the planned dental treatment with the patient.
