Snoring Appliances
Studies have shown that approximately 40% of the population of industrialized countries snores and that this increases to 60% in men above the age of 60.
The vibration of the areas of the soft tissues generates most of the noises produced by snoring. During sleep there is natural relaxation of the muscle tone in the neck and pharynx and the normal firmness of the muscle decreases, resulting in the formation of bottlenecks or complete obstruction of the airways, especially when the patient lies on their back.
To address this issue DTS create the Silensor device, which is an oral appliance that is worn at night. Its biggest advantage is that it is non bulky, adjustable and allows the patient to breathe more easily. The success of the treatment is largely dependent on the patients’ acceptance of the appliance. Obviously the depth and comfort of the patients sleep will improve with the use of the Silensor.
The Silensor has proven highly successful even when breathing through the nose is difficult or blocked since in most cases the noise associated with snoring originates from the constriction of the airways. The Silensor makes use of the fact that the pharyngeal space is enlarged when the lower jaw is moved to a forward position. The only limitation is this device cannot be used in edentulous patients.
